Honestly, I'm not....I am not a big eagles fan. Honestly, I'm not. Not that I'd be embarrassed to admit being an Eagles fan. Really. Not that I would hide that I listened to Eagles Live almost every day in 1982. Really, honestly.

With that said I think you're a little hard on the boys. First off, I think the southern rock thing is a stretch. I am pretty sure that you loved both Tom Petty's Southern Accents and Pack up the Plantation Live albums (and I do too), and those are much, much, much worse and more offensive as southern rock than any eagles song. The eagles were always a california cool band. I can think of a dozen eagles songs about either deserts or the west and not one about the south, except maybe seven bridges road.

The misogyny is fair enough, but are you really going to claim that the Eagles are particularly bad for a seventies rock band on misogyny? Led Zeppelin or the Rolling Stones (both of whom you really like) were definitely worse. The Rolling Stones put up a billboard in LA for their Black and Blue record with a woman bound, gagged and literally black and blue!

That said, the music is pretty limp and the matchbox 20 reference is spot on. Humorously, I never really liked this song, even in my 9th grade Eagles mania. Favorite Eagles songs: The Long Run and Take it Easy. I can sing these entire songs from memory right now and they still bring a little smile to my face. I actually drove through Winslow Arizona several times when I lived in AZ and it was always a time for quiet contemplation of the genius of the Eagles.Ben Bartonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9126042325422293178.post-87415300789586636282009-12-28T08:24:53.998-08:002009-12-28T08:24:53.998-08:00I blame Linda Ronstadt.
Although it's hard to...I blame Linda Ronstadt.

Although it's hard to remember now, with the Internet, and iTunes, and all the other ways to encounter new music, FM Radio reigned supreme in the 70s. Jeff has already discussed the magic of buying used vinyl LPs, but for the most part, we experienced music over the radio.

And mainstream FM radio seemed to reward blandness, or at least music without a lot of rough edges; that's why the Eagles, the Steve Miller Band and Steely Dan became such big stars. The ubiquity of those bands on the radio in those days makes it really tough for me to sit down and listen to them now; I've already heard the tracks countless times, and it gets pretty boring pretty quickly.

(And Jeff, you're right on the money about their 80s output not doing them any favors; "The Heat is On"? I couldn't stand Henley's earnest, self-righteous vocals on anything, so I didn't realize what a great song "The End of the Innocence" is until I heard Bruce Hornsby play it live a couple of years ago... Poor, burned-out Joe Walsh. I remember him being the musical guest on the Arsenio Hall show, and he crossed up the house band at least three times on "Life in the Fast Lane," to the point where they were exchanging slightly panicked looks behind him.)

Unfortunately, the things I do like about the Eagles--the great guitar playing and the amazing harmony vocals--come with a lot of baggage. Maybe that's lost on the younger generation of musicians who dig their sound; I'll stick with Gram Parsons, Fleetwood Mac and Warren Zevon, thanks.Andrew Clevengernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9126042325422293178.post-87638824252650428772009-12-27T15:46:54.589-08:002009-12-27T15:46:54.589-08:00So I'm stuck at gate B2 at Chicago Midway, wai...So I'm stuck at gate B2 at Chicago Midway, waiting for my delayed flight back to sunny L.A., and you drop this on me?
